Working in Collaboration

Guiding Young Minds is fully committed to working to combat knife crime and to supporting young people who have become caught up in the world of street gangs and violence.  We fully recognise that this is something we cannot do alone, and are committed to partnership working in a whole range of different areas, in order to best support the young people we are seeking to help.

The following organisations all partner with us in different ways, supporting the realisation of our core goals.  Some fund our services, others provide specialist expertise and facilities while still others provide support in kind.  We are immensely grateful to all of them, and proud to work with them in collaboration, towards our shared goals of helping troubled young people find a better route forward in life.

ASSIST and GYM are part of the same charity and work in close partnership.

ASSIST specialist Therapists are available to support GYM clients.

GYM works in partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme to provide young people with opportunity and adventure

The YEF has supported GYM with  funding and has provided comprehensive and positive evaluation.

Coventry

GYM has a daily presence in the city of Coventry, delivering youth clubs, sporting activities, outreach in different areas and also one to one mentoring, which is funded via the Youth Justice Service in conjunction with the city council. The GYM youth bus is a familiar sight in Coventry, as it travels the city streets.

Northamptonshire

GYM works with young people throughout the county of Northamptonshire, providing outreach services, workshops in schools and mentoring for individuals. Referrals are received from both Northamptonshire police, local councils and the youth justice services, and the office of the PCC has been generous in provision of funding.

Warwickshire

The GYM office is in Rugby in Warwickshire, where a youth club is held during school vacations. Outreach sessions with the GYM bus have only recently been expanded into Warwickshire and are now held in different area of the county, including Nuneaton, Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Stratford upon Avon, as local needs are identified.  Referrals are received from Warwickshire Youth Justice Service as well as from the county council.

Birmingham

GYM is also working increasingly in Birmingham, providing workshops in schools and also one to one mentoring.

Music Studios

Mentors often take young people to music studios, where they can express themselves and their emotions through music, rap and lyrics.

In Northamptonshire GYM works with the Compound in Wellingborough and with CIM Studios in Kettering. In Coventry we work with Powerhouse Studios managed by Media Mania. Each studio allows young people to be creative in composing their own music and lyrics.

McDonalds & Langar Aid

Both Langar Aid and McDonalds are extremely generous in providing refreshments for the different GYM youth clubs and other activities that we organise.

McDonald’s in Coventry also helps by providing accommodation for young peoples activities.

Red Corner Gym

Other young people engaged in GYM mentoring find it helpful to work through their feelings through boxing. Our partnership with Red Corner Boxing enables GYM mentees to take part in boxing sessions and many young people find that involvement in boxing as a sport enables self-discipline and helps them to change their lifestyles.

DK Foundation

Guiding Young Minds is focussed on helping to reduce knife crime.

27-year-old Daniel Kennel died in 2018 from a single stab would inflictedby a former school friend, just yards from his home in Coventry. Founded in memory of Daniel, the DK Foundation is a positive voice in the city, emphasising the important message lives not knives.. GYM are grateful for support from the DK Foundation and are proud to work in partnership with them.

Belgrade Theatre

GYM frequently works together with the Belgrade theatre in Coventry, co-producing sketches, raps and short films and involving local young people in creatively expounding the anti-violence message.

Kier Careers

KIER are a very important partner to the GYM service, as they are positive in offering job opportunities to the young people we work with. In this way young people are provided with a way forward in life, despite previous misdemeanours.

HMP Five Wells

Prison work is a very important part of Guiding Young Minds service provision. GYM supports prisoners at HMP Five Wells as well as several other local prisons.

We also work in collaboration with Five Wells to deliver programmes discouraging young people from following a path through life that is likely to lead to future imprisonment.

Orbit Housing

Orbit Housing sponsor GYM outreach to enable the GYM bus to visit their housing estates, engaging young people in positive activity and so meeting community needs.

Children in Need

Children in need have been generous in support of Guiding Young Minds

David Lloyd

David Lloyd is now working in partnership with Guiding Young Minds to give young adults who have formerly been involved in criminal behaviour or in prison full use of their facilities – gym, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and different classes – experiences which previously may not have been open to them.

This collaboration aims to help young offenders along their rehabilitation journey, providing incentives to continue living positively.

There are also opportunities for apprenticeships or work at the gym.

CV Lifestyles Gyms

CV Lifestyles gives gym mentors access to a range of gyms, pools and sports centres across Coventry, where we can

accompany young people we are mentoring and also encourage them to take part in activities on their own
