Youth Clubs, Activities and Adventure

Sport, Activities and Adventure

The GYM Team are very aware that most young people do not engage by simply sitting talking. Every effort is therefore made to engage the young person in activities wich interest and motivate them, as part of the GYM provision.

Our aim is to show the young person that there are wider possibilities in life than the negative behaviours they have been engaged in, possibilities that, due to their background, might not have even occurred to them.

Sometimes a young person will be introduced to an activity provided by one of our partners (for example boxing or music). At other times their mentor will engage alongside them in an activity of their choice (eg. fishing). Opportunities are provided for team sports and for excursions further afield – we have done bike trips to Coombe Abbey and coach trips to trampoline parks and Ninja Warrior. It is now in the planning to go further, on a camping trip to the Peak District.

Through all these different activities we seek to motivate and inspire young people, showing them possibilities that may not have been available to them and so encouraging them to make more positive lifestyle choices.

Mentoring engaging in activities is important

Youth Clubs

Coventry is recognised as a hotspot for gangs and knife crime, and the dangers in this area have become significantly worse over the last four years. Click here to read an article on this topic.

GYM currently runs youth clubs in several different areas of Coventry.  All these youth clubs are open to all young people, including  our mentees. However, GYM understands the postcode wars happening with our younger generation. To keep our young people safe, we work with them to enable them to attend the youth club which will best support them.

Research indicates that outdoor activities have positive impacts on children’s learning, behaviour, and well-being.
Being active in natural settings can also reduce stress, build resilience, help empower young people to overcome challenges and improve focus when they return indoors.

We engage in different activities according to young people’s preferences

For the reason above many of our activities take place outside, but others such as crafting may be inside. We also involve young people in musical activities, including taking them to recording studios which are indoors.

During school holidays GYM also manages HAF programmes around Coventry, supporting families with low incomes and children with special needs.

Day Out Trips

How Trips Can Broaden and Inspire Young Minds

GYM also takes young people on different trips, providing valuable opportunities for young individuals to experience new environments, be exposed to and learn about different cultures.

This helps to broaden and develop their mental horizons and provide them with a wider perspective of the world. These experiences foster understanding, care and compassion, so supporting the  organisation’s goal to transform lives through attitude and behaviour management and ultimately to empower young people to make positive choices.

The Duke of of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) is a prestigious program that empowers young people to develop skills, confidence, and resilience through a series of challenging activities. The award is open to individuals aged 14-24 and is divided into different levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Participants engage in activities related to volunteering, physical fitness, skills development, and adventurous expeditions, with the gold level also including a residential project.

The DofE program is highly regarded for its ability to foster personal development, leadership, and a spirit of adventure among young individuals. It is recognized internationally and is often seen as a valuable addition to a young person’s resume or college application.

GYM is now a recognised delivery agency for this prestigious scheme. The program’s emphasis on self-improvement, community engagement, and outdoor pursuits aligns with the broader goals of personal growth and empowerment which Guiding Young Minds aspire to.  For those young people who never knew DOFE existed or may have never had the chance to take part, GYM can now offer this opportunity to the young people we support.

Young people who engage in the scheme through GYM will also have the chance to take part in a summer camping trip to the Peak District, all equipment supplied.
